Frances 1, Heather 0
Oh, you guys. It finally happened.
I was all ready to head to Jamie's for the weekend. Had my bags packed, in the car, ready for take-off. I was excited to start the weekend with my honey. Start the car, try to back out of the driveway. And, I'm stuck.
I've been pretty beast at getting unstuck with Frances the Fucus (as I have so named my car) so I figured I could handle it. Put it in reverse, back slowly. Roll forward, hit the gas in reverse a little harder. Almost there! Roll forward, backward, still not unstuck. Make the mistake of turning my wheels. Over and over again, back and forth. I'm starting to get pissed. I begin my inner monologue. The snow isn't even that deep! What the fuck is wrong with me?! COME ON FRANCES, IT'S TIME TO GOOOO!
After like 10 minutes of this, I. Am. Pissed.
So I turn her off, get out, and in a much-too-dramatic flourish, I slam the car door. I stomp inside, looking for someone to take pity on me and just help me GET OUT OF THIS DAMNED DRIVEWAY.
Talk to my dad, he'll help! I'm instructed to go straighten my wheels and put salt under my tires.
I grab the bucket o' salt, head off to the car, and try to open the door. I try again. I know it's useless, but I check the passenger door and hatch just in case. But I know my car all too well.
I'm locked the fuck out.
With the keys in the ignition.
With my purse, wallet, cell phone, laptop, and overnight bag all trapped inside.
If you read my first post about OCD, you will find this ridiculous. How could I POSSIBLY lock myself out? Me, the girl who checks for her keys 50 times before leaving her car?
Well, it just so happens being super pissed off trumps OCD sometimes.
I was ready to throw a 3 year old cataclysmic fit. I don't have spare keys! Every time I want to get one they tell me it's gonna be uber expensive because it's chipped. So I don't have a spare set. Dad and I tried to get in with the wire hanger trick but to no avail. I had to call a tow truck and tell them what an IDIOT I am.
15 minutes later, guy shows up, gets in my car in like 2 seconds. I write him a check for 30 dollars (I should have written "utter stupidity" in the memo line). Then he starts backing out of the driveway as I try to get unstuck. I'm in better spirits now that I've safely recovered my belongings, but I'm still stuck. Really stuck. And no one is here to help me anymore. /cry
Guy pulls slowly back into the driveway, jumps out with his tow strap, and pulls me to freedom. He looks at my back window and points to my WMU sticker. "Fellow alumni, have a nice day!" he says as he jumps back in the truck and heads off.
Yes, that's right. My college education just saved me another 20 bucks to have this guy pull me out of my own driveway.
Thousands of dollars well spent.

Addictive Personalities
Is it just me, or are phone apps/games addicting. I mean seriously addicting. Maybe it's just because I am ridiculously OCD, but I swear the minute I get a new, trendy game on my droid I am all over that shit night and day.
SongPop was one of the worst. I played it for hours daily, no lie. Who the hell plays songpop for more than like 5 minutes, really. I've always been like this too. Even facebook games like farmville. I tore that UP back in the day when it was still cool.
And angry birds, but I think everyone who is anyone had that addiction.
I find my addictive personality very strange. Usually types such as myself will get addicted to bad things like cigarettes or the occasional bottle of wine every night. I smoked cigarettes from the time I was in middle school (trying to be cool, I swear I did not inhale, just like Bill Clinton) through college and after. But I was never addicted. I maybe recall once that I physically CRAVED a cigarette. The other times I knew it would calm me down or I was on my way to drunkytown and that pack of smokes was magnetized to my hand. But I could smoke every day for a month straight and still just stop whenever I wanted to, no aids, no withdrawls or bitchiness from lack of nicotine.
But you put Temple Run in front of me and I'm like a crack fiend.
Eventually I burn myself out on it, only to replace it with another less lame game. The same thing happens with my DS games too.
Video games aside, I also do the same for books. If I start a good book, I become immediately obsessed. Like I have to read the last two Harry Potter's in a row for 2 days straight and finish them both obsessed. If I like the story line, I will re-read a million times over and never get bored of it. I've read the same book like 3 times in a row right after the other because I love it so much. I also become very emotionally invested in books as well. I wonder if anyone else feels that way- not just "oh it is a sad part, I tear up a bit" but for real feel like you're LIVING the book. Like when the main character gets dumped you want to crawl in a corner and eat Ben and Jerry's for a week.
I become addicted to people as well I think, which is a fancy word for "clingy".
.I think my crazy is showing.
It's late, I'd better go to bed before I divulge more ridiculous nonsense about myself.
Oh, and I'm also seriously addicted to Snapple Apple. Really. Go try it. Your life will change.

New Computer Part Deux
OMG OMG OMG.
It's here. IT'S FINALLY HERE!
I feel like a kid on Christmas right now. I watched for that god damned UPS truck for hours today just WAITING for my new computer to be delivered. And finally around 6 PM, it was.
I forget how time consuming setting up a new computer is. I mean really, I had to download all of my old programs, get it personalized. Import my iTunes (which was RIDICULOUS and still not complete). Even just getting all the cords together was a bitch. Especially when I realized what an epic failure I was to not check to see if it had wireless capability. <enter 8 PM death run to WalMart in shitty weather with deer running in front of me>
It really is beautiful though. My monitor is huge, the CPU is huge too (that's what I get for getting a gaming computer). I hate the cheap ass keyboard it came with but next week I'm gonna get an inexpensive wireless one (that's quieter). I've managed to log into my game long enough to see that it looks amazeballs with the new graphics card, but it's not anywhere close to being all the way downloaded so I have to wait :(
One thing I do like so far about Windows 8 is the ability to change the language format with a click of a button. That means I can actually switch to Spanish if I want and it will auto correct it, spell check, etc. That makes me VERY happy.
The start menu takes some getting used to because the interface is totally different, but I'll manage.
So far so good! Nothing's broken or anything!
Seriously, major nerdgasm going on right now. Everyone should be jealous.

New Computer: Part 1
I told you this would happen, so you only have yourself to blame for reading it.
So I've been debating getting a new computer for awhile- I've had this laptop for about 3 years and you know how I am. Every so often I'm ready to upgrade, and I want a desktop. I had purchased this thinking I'd be able to take it back and forth to work and such but I never really did. And I want something with a better system than the laptop provides.
I love my music collection but I want more room to expand it, and movies too eventually. And I may or may not have a slight addiction to World of Warcrack, and I may have been researching for a month to get the best computer at the best price that will run it on high or ultra instead of epic fail shit like my laptop does. And I might want to play Skyrim on it. And maybe that beta of elder scrolls online.
I kind of became a gaming type nerd. And you all know who you can blame for that (*points at her significant other*). I'm not as bad as most though. But I definitely want the system to be able to do all the things I wanna do. This bitch couldn't even run the Sims.
So i just ordered it as my taxes arrived right on time, and if there wasn't a screaming 4 year old in my ear right now I'd probably be a bit more excited.
Stay tuned for part two when it actually arrives and i get to test it out :)

How to be a robot: A guide to applying for teaching jobs
As a tween looking to find a job for the first time, it was always beaten into my head that in order to be successful at obtaining employment, you MUST:
1. Apply in person (and dress nicely, don't walk in looking like you rolled out of bed for christ's sake)
2. Bring ample resumes
3. Always, ALWAYS call them back or re-visit within a week to see if the position is still open, if they've reviewed your papers, kiss ass, etc.
Now I know as a bright eyed, bushy tailed 15 year old I did just that. I also know that I've always been much more mature than other people my age who scoffed at the idea of working at all let alone making themselves presentable. You were supposed to take the time to show these potential employers that you are dedicated and responsible. Showing up at the place with a resume in hand is infinitely better than applying online or calling.
Right?
Fast forward to college. I walk in to Holiday Inn trying to find an evening job to help pay rent, bills, tuition, etc. I put on my best "hire me, I'm amazeballs" outfit, resume in hand, and walk into their lobby. I am then quickly told that in order to get hired, I must go online and fill out the application that way. If we want you, we will call you. Do NOT call us.
I am shocked.
Seriously? Don't call? But I got all dressed up... but can I just speak with the manager and leave thi.... no? okay.
Fast forward to graduation, teaching application time! It's daunting, the idea that I have to have a cover letter, a whole portfolio of information about me to apply for a job. And I start browsing the websites to see what openings there are in the districts around me after I attend the career fair (and dress up, I might add).
This is when my whole world view became warped. Because damn near EVERY SINGLE DISTRICT within a 100 mile radius told me one thing: Go to applitrack, fill out our lengthy online application, upload all your papers, click the position you're interested in, and submit. DO NOT mail us your resume. DO NOT walk in to our administration office. DO NOT, absolutely DO NOT CALL US. If you're worthy, we will call you.
What. The. Fuck.
Now there are still some apparently nostalgic districts and schools that do not abide by this ridiculous notion (including my high school alma mater, thank you very much). But the ones that would actually like to see you come in with a paper packet of your information is still extremely hard to come by.
To me, this is a travesty. I understand that many of these places get hundreds of applicants, especially for music jobs like I need. But to completely cut off the human experience? To make you "take a number" like you're in line at the DMV? To not even be able to give a real first impression aside from the same bullshit that everyone puts on their resume? The questionnaire that everyone knows how to fill out?
What happened to good old fashioned human connections?
My first job (as most people know) teaching was because I was hired over the phone. However, the one detail that many people DON'T know is this- 2 months prior to that phone interview, I went to WMU's career fair and DRESSED UP and BROUGHT MY RESUME and INTERVIEWED with the district heads of said school in Arizona.
THAT made a lasting impression on them, THAT is why I was called, interviewed again, and moved out to AZ within two weeks. Not because I went online and typed in what everyone knows they wanted to hear.
When I moved back, I interviewed with a district south of me. The job was perfect, absolutely perfect for me. Elementary music. I had applied online of course, and they called me. But THEY CALLED ME, not emailed me. And I interviewed. A couple days later, I received another call from the woman I interviewed with and she told me how wonderful I was, how amazing of a fit I'd be, but there was just one other person with more experience that they went with. I could tell it was actually a hard decision for them and a hard call for her to make to me. I cried and cried after that. But, I appreciated the fact that she took the time, at 8 oclock at night, to talk to me and offer the news.
Let's go to my latest failure of job apps, because it's what spurred this blog entry.
I go online, searching just in case someone needs a music teacher halfway through the year. One comes up for a school north of me. I do the online bullshit again, same exact application as the 200 other districts I've applied for. Tweaked a couple things. Done.
A couple days later, I get an automated email from the website saying I'm being invited to interview, please check the website for 15 minute intervals and sign up for a time slot. This is where you go, etc. I find this odd, but I do it, I sign up for my time slot. But I'm SCREAMING inside. I didn't get a call, not even a PERSONAL email from the district, but an automated letter saying to pick a time slot.
Then the mother of all ice storms hit, and my drive in the morning is brutal. I call an hour ahead to let them know I will be late, the lady is great and I finally make it 10 minutes past my time. They swapped me with someone else, no biggie.
I go in, and interview with 3 or 4 male administrators (it's a blur now). I am desperately nervous. I NEED this job, I WANT this job. This is my FIRST time meeting or seeing any of them, I have only 15 minutes to convince them that even though I haven't had a damn job in 3 years that I'm qualified to fill this position, and I've just had the drive from hell that took 2 hours. I was nervous- and you know me, I'm chatty fucking cathy when I"m nervous. I try to reign myself in, I'm giving good answers but talking TOO MUCH. HEATHER SHUT UP. And then I see it- the exasperated sigh from the principal.
Many of you will tell me not to look into it, it probably wasn't directed at you (he WAS looking out into the lobby at the time). But I know I was sighing at myself in my head, and I have no doubt he was sighing at me as well. But that just froze me in my tracks. Really? You couldn't hold it in? I'm like a goddamn deer in headlights.
Interview is finally over, I leave, make my way back home. We will contact you in a couple days, we need to move quickly, etc.
A week and a half goes by, and I get another automated email.
"The position you have applied for has been filled." Other bs, other bs, blah blah. Do NOT RESPOND this is automated.
My professors always told me that even though it can be painful, to ask them when they call you what you could do better. How can I do that when all I get is "take a number"? How am I supposed to improve myself for future applications and jobs if I'm not allowed to speak to anyone?
How are you going to get excellent educators through an assembly line for your students? You may as well hire a damn robot.
Yes, I'm upset that I don't have a teaching job right now, as many of my fellow colleagues from school. But I'm more upset at the fact that I don't think these schools are giving us a fighting chance. I AM grateful that I got asked for an interview, albeit automated, when others did not. But it's slipping farther and farther away as time goes by.
My advice for teenagers today? STILL put your best foot forward and walk through that damned door like you mean it, no matter what society says.
